Free Use & Donations
1. The Service Is Free
Every feature of Second in Command is available to every registered user at no cost. Goathead Software does not charge for accounts, does not charge for storage, does not charge for access to any part of the catalog, and does not place any feature behind a "premium" gate.
Specifically, there is no:
- Subscription fee, monthly or annual.
- One-time purchase or "lifetime" plan.
- Tiered membership with a paid tier.
- Feature that is available only to donors.
- Ad-supported tier or ad-free paid tier — there are simply no ads.
- Data-monetization model. We do not sell user data (see the Privacy Policy above), and we do not have a "free version" that is secretly paid for by advertising or data sales.
This is a deliberate choice. The Service exists to be useful to the tabletop community, and we believe that usefulness should not be gated behind a paywall.
2. Donations
Running a website is not free. Servers, hosting, storage, backups, domain registration, TLS certificates, email delivery, and the ongoing time required to maintain and improve the Service all cost real money. To cover those costs, Goathead Software accepts voluntary donations from users who wish to contribute.
Our suggested donation is $1 per month. This is not a required amount, not a minimum, not a subscription, and not an expectation. It is simply a suggestion based on what it roughly costs to keep a single user's data hosted, backed up, and served for a month. If $1/month is what you would like to give, wonderful — it goes a long way when enough people chip in. If you would rather give a different amount, or give once, or not give at all, that is equally fine, and nothing about your experience of the Service changes either way.
Donations are:
- Entirely voluntary. You are never required to donate, and nothing about your experience of the Service depends on whether you do.
- Not a subscription by default. If you choose to set up a recurring $1/month donation, that is your choice and you can cancel it at any time through the payment provider. We do not enroll anyone in recurring payments automatically, and we do not use dark patterns to make cancellation difficult.
- Not a purchase. Donating does not buy you a product, a service, or a contractual entitlement. It is a gift to help keep the Service running.
- Not tax-deductible unless we explicitly say otherwise. Goathead Software is not a registered charity, and donations to us are not charitable contributions for tax purposes. Please consult your own tax advisor if this matters to you.
- Non-refundable. Because donations are voluntary gifts and are used immediately to pay operating costs, we generally cannot refund them. If you donated in error, contact us — we will do our best to help.
Where donations are accepted, the mechanism will be clearly labeled as a donation and not as a purchase, subscription, or fee. If you ever see language on this Service that suggests otherwise, please let us know — it would be a mistake.
3. How Donations Are Used
Donations to Goathead Software are used exclusively to cover the costs of operating and maintaining the Service. In order of priority, those costs include:
- Hosting and server costs. The infrastructure that runs the Service, including compute, database, and network costs.
- Storage and backups. Keeping your data safe and ensuring we can recover from failures.
- Domain and TLS. Keeping the Service reachable at its address and secured with valid certificates.
- Email delivery. Transactional email such as password resets and account notifications.
- Third-party services. Any small, necessary services the Service relies on to function (for example, error monitoring or dependency subscriptions).
- Development time. Time spent fixing bugs, responding to user reports, and adding requested features.
- Source materials. The purchase of official rulebooks, supplements, PDFs, and physical copies of games so that the catalog can be built and maintained accurately. We buy the games we list — we do not scrape, redistribute, or work from unofficial copies. These materials are used internally as reference and are not reproduced or shared through the Service.
If donations ever exceed the actual cost of running the Service for a given period, the surplus is retained and applied to future operating costs. It is not distributed as profit to any individual, and it is not used for anything unrelated to the Service.
We do not publish detailed financial statements at this time, but the general principle is simple: money in supports the Service, and nothing else.
4. Payment Processing & Financial Data
All donations are collected and processed by third-party payment providers — for example, established donation platforms and payment processors that specialize in handling online transactions. Goathead Software does not operate its own payment infrastructure, and we do not handle payment card data ourselves.
What this means in practice:
- You enter your payment information directly into the payment provider's interface. It never touches our servers.
- The payment provider is responsible for the security of your financial data. They are PCI-DSS compliant (or equivalent) and are the ones who handle encryption, tokenization, and fraud detection for the transaction.
- We may receive a limited confirmation from the provider — such as your name or email address associated with the donation, the amount, the date, and a transaction identifier — so we can acknowledge the donation and reconcile our records. We do not receive your card number or any other payment credential.
- We do not store financial data. There is no database field on our side containing card numbers, expiry dates, CVV codes, or bank details. There never will be.
- Recurring donations are managed by the provider. If you set up a recurring $1/month donation, the subscription itself is held by the payment provider. To cancel or change it, you do so through their interface (or by contacting them), not through us — because we never had the payment details to begin with.
We choose established third-party providers precisely because handling payment data is a specialized, high-stakes activity that requires infrastructure and compliance we do not want to expose our users to. By routing all donations through a trusted processor, your financial information remains in the hands of organizations whose entire business is protecting it.
The payment provider's own privacy policy and terms govern how they handle your data during the transaction. We encourage you to review those before donating. Any questions about a specific transaction — receipts, refunds, charge disputes, card declines — should be directed to the payment provider first, since they hold the record of the transaction.
5. What Donations Are Not
To avoid any ambiguity, donating to Goathead Software does not:
- Grant you any ownership, equity, or financial interest in Goathead Software or the Service.
- Give you any voting rights, governance rights, or control over how the Service is run.
- Unlock any additional feature, feature set, data, or capability.
- Entitle you to priority support, faster responses, or any service level agreement.
- Make you a customer in any contractual sense.
- Give you any right to a refund, credit, or exchange.
- Exempt you from these Terms of Service or any other policy on this page.
Donors and non-donors are treated identically. There is no donor badge, no donor tier, no donor-only channel, and no donor-specific behavior of any kind. We mention this not because we think anyone expects otherwise, but because it matters for clarity: the Service is free, and donating is simply a way to say "thanks, keep it going."
6. Thank You
If you have donated — whether it is the suggested $1/month, a one-time gift, or something larger — thank you. Genuinely. Every contribution, however small, extends the life of the Service and makes it possible for the next person to use it for free. There is no obligation and no expectation, but the support is deeply appreciated and directly put to work.
If you cannot donate, that is completely fine. Using the Service, telling other people about it, reporting bugs, and suggesting improvements are all valuable contributions in their own right.
6. Operational Costs
There are a number of costs associated with running this server, including, but not limited to the following:
- High Tier VPS Server
- Domain Name
- Rule Books, Supplements and other game resources.
- Development and Support Time
- Other third party services
Support & Community
Second in Command is a small, independently-run product from Goathead Software. Support is provided on a best-effort basis by the people who build and maintain the Service, along with helpful members of the community. We are not a large company with a formal support desk, and we do not pretend to be. What we do offer is genuine, human help — usually fast, always in good faith.
1. Discord Support Server
The primary place to get help, report bugs, request features, and talk with other users is our Discord server. It is the fastest way to reach us and the best place to find answers to common questions.
Within the Discord server you'll typically find:
- A #support channel for questions, bug reports, and troubleshooting.
- A #feature-requests channel for suggesting improvements.
- A #general channel for discussion with other users.
- Release notes and announcements so you can see what's changing and when.
Using Discord for support is free. You do not need to donate, and you do not need to have a paid Discord subscription (Discord Nitro) to participate.
2. Community Conduct
The Discord server is a shared space, and participation is subject to a few basic expectations. By joining, you agree to:
- Be respectful. Treat other members with basic courtesy. Disagreement is fine; hostility is not.
- Stay on topic. Post support questions in support channels, feature requests in the requests channel, and general chat in general.
- Do not spam. Repeatedly posting the same question across channels, or pinging moderators for attention, is not welcome.
- Do not harass or abuse others. This includes targeted messages, slurs, threats, and any form of discrimination.
- Do not share illegal content or content that infringes third-party rights (for example, pirated copies of rulebooks or PDFs).
- Do not attempt to sell products, services, or accounts through the server without prior permission.
- Follow Discord's own Terms of Service and Community Guidelines. Our server operates on Discord, and Discord's rules apply on top of ours.
Moderators may issue warnings, mute, kick, or ban members who violate these expectations. Bans are made at the discretion of the moderation team and are generally reserved for repeated or serious violations. If you believe a moderation action was taken in error, you can reach out through the contact address below.
3. Third-Party Platform Notice
Discord is a third-party service. It is not operated, controlled, or affiliated with Goathead Software or Second in Command. When you use Discord to reach us — or to talk with other users — you are using a platform that has its own terms of service, privacy policy, and data practices, which we do not control.
Specifically:
- Your Discord account is between you and Discord. Goathead Software does not have access to your Discord credentials, and we cannot recover, reset, or manage your Discord account.
- Discord's privacy policy governs what Discord collects. Anything you post in the server is stored on Discord's infrastructure, not on ours. We do not receive, store, or control that data beyond what Discord makes visible to server administrators.
- Discord's Terms of Service govern your use of the platform. We cannot override or extend them, and we are not responsible for their enforcement.
- Server administration is limited in scope. As server administrators, we can see the messages and metadata Discord exposes to us, and we can take moderation actions. We cannot see your direct messages, your account history outside our server, or any information Discord has not made available to us.
We encourage you to review Discord's own privacy policy and terms of service before using the platform, just as we would encourage you to review any other service you sign up for. Using Discord to reach us is entirely optional — see the section below for alternatives.
When you use the Discord server, you are also agreeing that any content you post in our channels may be seen by other members. Do not share personal information, passwords, or anything else you would not want publicly visible. Support in the server is public by default.
4. Other Ways to Get Help
If Discord is not an option for you — or if you prefer a private channel — you can also reach Goathead Software by email:
Goathead Software — General Support
Email: support@goatheadsoftware.example
We aim to respond within a few business days. Response times may be
longer during busy periods.
For matters specifically about privacy, data, or intellectual property, please use the contact addresses listed in those sections of this page rather than the general support address. Those inquiries are routed differently and handled more directly.
5. Support Expectations
To set honest expectations:
- Support is best-effort. We do not guarantee response times, resolution times, or that every issue will be resolved.
- Bug reports are welcome and appreciated — even if we can't fix every one, knowing about them helps.
- Feature requests are considered but not guaranteed. Some suggestions fit the direction of the Service; some don't; some we simply don't have time for right now.
- Account-specific issues (password resets, account deletion, data exports) are best handled by email rather than Discord, because we may need to verify your identity.
- Abusive or repetitive inquiries may be ignored, and repeat offenders may be barred from support channels.
We genuinely want to help, and the people behind Goathead Software care about Second in Command working well for you. But being honest about scope — small team, best-effort support, no guaranteed SLAs — is part of keeping that relationship honest.
Privacy Policy & Terms of Service
Goathead Software ("we", "us", "our") operates Second in Command (the "Service"). We are committed to being transparent about how the Service works and how we handle your information. This page contains both our Privacy Policy and our Terms of Service. It is written in plain language on purpose — legalese is not our friend, and your trust is more valuable than any amount of obfuscation.
Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy describes the types of information Goathead Software may collect from you or that you may provide when you use Second in Command (the "Service"), and our practices for collecting, using, maintaining, protecting, and disclosing that information. By using the Service, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
1. Information We Collect
We collect only the minimum amount of information necessary to operate the Service. We do not collect information "just in case" and we do not collect information to resell it later. Specifically, we collect:
1.1 Information You Provide Directly
- Account information. When you register, we collect your email address, an optional display name, and a securely-hashed password. We never store your password in plain text, and we never have access to your password in its original form.
- Game system preferences. The game systems you select during registration, so the Service can personalize what it shows you.
- Support communications. If you contact us for help, we retain the contents of that conversation so we can assist you and improve our support over time.
1.2 Information Collected Automatically
When you use the Service, our servers may log basic technical information that is standard for any web application:
- IP address (used for security, abuse prevention, and coarse geographic diagnostics — not for tracking you across the internet).
- Browser type and version, operating system, and device type.
- Pages or features accessed within the Service, and timestamps.
- A session identifier that allows the Service to keep you signed in.
We do not use fingerprinting, cross-site tracking pixels, or third-party analytics that follow you around the web. The technical logs we keep exist for reliability and security, not for profiling.
1.3 Information We Do Not Collect
For the avoidance of doubt, we do not collect:
- Precise geolocation data.
- Contact lists, address books, or your social graph.
- Biometric data.
- Health, financial, or government-identification information.
- Any data from other apps or services on your device.
2. How We Use Your Information
Goathead Software uses the information we collect for a narrow set of purposes, all of which relate to running the Service you asked us to run:
- To operate the Service. Authenticating you, maintaining your session, delivering the features you request, and keeping your account settings intact.
- To personalize your experience. Remembering your game system preferences so the Service reflects them.
- To communicate with you. Sending transactional messages such as password resets or account confirmations. We will not send marketing emails unless you explicitly opt in, and even then, every message will include an unsubscribe link.
- To keep the Service safe. Detecting and preventing fraud, abuse, and unauthorized access.
- To improve the Service. Understanding aggregate usage patterns so we can make the Service faster and more useful. This analysis uses de-identified, aggregated data only.
- To comply with the law. Responding to valid legal requests only when we are legally obligated to do so, and only to the minimum extent required.
3. Data Sharing — Our Commitment
We do not sell your data. We do not rent your data. We do not trade your data. We do not share your data with advertisers, marketing networks, data brokers, analytics resellers, lead-generation companies, or any similar entity. There is no "opt-out" because there is nothing to opt out of. We have never done this, we are not doing it now, and we will not do it in the future. If that ever changed — which it will not — we would seek your explicit, affirmative consent before any such change took effect, and we would provide a clear way for you to decline.
The only narrow circumstances in which information may leave our systems are:
- Service providers who operate the Service on our behalf. We use a small number of vendors to host servers and deliver email. These vendors are contractually bound to use your data only to perform the specific task we hired them for, and are prohibited from using it for any other purpose. They are not permitted to sell, share, or monetize your data.
- Legal obligations. If compelled by a valid court order, subpoena, or equivalent legal process, we may be required to disclose specific information. When legally permitted, we will notify you so you can respond. We will disclose only what is strictly required, never more.
- Protection of rights and safety. In the rare case where disclosure is necessary to prevent imminent harm to a person or to protect the legal rights of Goathead Software, the Service, or its users.
- Business transfer. If the Service — or Goathead Software itself — is ever acquired, merged, or transferred to another organization, your information would transfer as part of that transaction. We would notify you in advance. Critically, the acquirer would be bound by the same commitments in this policy — including the commitment never to sell your data — unless you explicitly agreed to different terms.
That list is exhaustive. There are no other circumstances under which your data leaves our control.
4. Data Retention
We keep your information only for as long as it is needed to provide the Service and satisfy the purposes described in this policy. Concretely:
- Active account data is retained while your account remains open.
- When you delete your account, we permanently delete or irreversibly anonymize your personal information within thirty (30) days, except where we are legally required to retain specific records for a longer period (e.g., tax or accounting records).
- Server logs are rotated and deleted on a rolling basis, typically within ninety (90) days.
- Support conversations are retained for up to two (2) years so we can reference past issues, then deleted.
5. Security
We take the security of your information seriously and employ industry-standard safeguards, including:
- Encryption of data in transit using HTTPS/TLS.
- Salted, slow password hashing (we never store plaintext passwords).
- Encrypted authentication cookies that are inaccessible to client-side JavaScript (HTTP-only) and transmitted only over secure connections.
- Access controls limiting who within Goathead Software can see personal data, on a strict need-to-know basis.
- Regular software updates and dependency patching.
That said, no system is perfectly secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security, and we will not pretend otherwise. If we ever become aware of a data breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you and any relevant authorities as required by applicable law, promptly and without unreasonable delay.
6. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have specific legal rights regarding your personal information. We extend the following rights to all users, regardless of jurisdiction, because they are the right thing to do:
- Access. You can request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Correction. You can update or correct inaccurate information through your account settings, or by contacting us.
- Deletion. You can request that we delete your account and associated personal information.
- Portability. You can request an export of your data in a common, machine-readable format.
- Objection. You can object to any processing you do not agree with, and we will stop unless we have a compelling legal reason to continue (which, for this Service, is essentially never the case).
- Withdrawal of consent. Where processing is based on consent, you can withdraw that consent at any time.
To exercise any of these rights, contact Goathead Software using the details in the Contact Us section below. We will respond within thirty (30) days.
7. Children's Privacy
The Service is not directed to children under the age of thirteen (13), and Goathead Software does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have inadvertently collected such information, we will delete it promptly. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.
Trademarks & Third-Party Content
Second in Command is a catalog, reference, and organizational tool for tabletop games and related products. The Service references games, game systems, expansions, and related products that are created, published, and owned by third parties. Goathead Software does not claim any ownership over those products, their names, their logos, their artwork, or any other element of their identity.
1. Ownership Acknowledgment
The Service may display, list, reference, or link to the following categories of third-party intellectual property:
- Game titles and product names. The names of tabletop games, board games, card games, role-playing games, wargames, and their expansions, editions, and supplements.
- Publisher and designer names. The names of companies, studios, and individual designers who create and publish those games.
- Logos and trade dress. Publisher logos, game logos, and visual identities associated with specific products, where such material appears.
- Artwork and imagery. Cover art, card art, miniatures, and other visual assets, where such material appears.
- Game mechanics and terminology. Rules systems, named mechanics, factions, characters, and setting-specific terminology that are protected by copyright, trademark, or both.
Each of these categories of intellectual property is owned by its respective creator, publisher, or rights holder. Goathead Software does not claim, and expressly disclaims, any ownership, license, or proprietary interest in any of them. All rights remain with their respective owners.
2. Nature of Our Use
Our use of third-party trademarks and product names is nominative and referential in nature. In plain language: we use the name of a game because we are talking about that game. We use a publisher's name because we are identifying who publishes the game. This is the same way a library catalog uses the titles of books, or a review site uses the names of films.
We use these names to:
- Identify which game or product a user is organizing, tracking, or referencing.
- Help users find and distinguish between different games in the catalog.
- Provide accurate, factual information about the products themselves.
- Link to or reference the official source of a product where applicable.
We do not use third-party trademarks to:
- Suggest that Goathead Software created, owns, or controls any third-party product.
- Suggest that any publisher endorses, sponsors, or is affiliated with the Service.
- Confuse users about the source of any product, feature, or content.
- Trade on the goodwill of a trademark holder for our own commercial benefit beyond legitimate reference.
- Reproduce copyrighted material beyond what is necessary for identification and reference.
3. No Affiliation or Endorsement
Unless we explicitly state otherwise in writing, Goathead Software is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or officially connected to any game publisher, designer, distributor, or rights holder whose products appear in the catalog.
References to specific games, publishers, or products do not constitute an endorsement by Goathead Software of those products, nor do they constitute an endorsement by those publishers of the Service. Any statement to the contrary would require an explicit, written agreement, and none exists by default.
If Goathead Software ever establishes a formal partnership, sponsorship, or licensing arrangement with a publisher, we will clearly disclose it in the relevant context — for example, on the game's detail page or in a dedicated disclosure. Absent such a disclosure, no relationship exists.
4. Copyright and Fair Use
Where the Service displays descriptive text, summaries, or short excerpts of third-party content, such use is made for the purposes of identification, commentary, reference, or education, and is intended to fall within applicable fair use or fair dealing provisions. We do not reproduce substantial portions of copyrighted works, and we do not provide rules text, full card lists, or other material in a way that would substitute for purchasing the original product.
If you are a rights holder and believe that any content in the Service exceeds these bounds, please see the takedown process in Section 5 below.
5. Takedown Requests and Corrections
Goathead Software respects the intellectual property rights of others and expects our users to do the same. If you are a rights holder — or an authorized representative of one — and you believe that the Service contains material that infringes your rights or misuses your trademarks, please contact us at the address below with the following information:
- Your name, address, telephone number, and email address.
- A description of the trademark or copyrighted work you believe is being misused.
- The specific location within the Service where the material appears (a URL or screen path is ideal).
- A statement explaining why you believe the use is not authorized.
- A statement that the information in your notice is accurate, and that you are the rights holder or authorized to act on their behalf.
- Your physical or electronic signature.
We will review every notice promptly and, where appropriate, remove or modify the material in question. We aim to respond within fourteen (14) business days and to resolve legitimate concerns without requiring formal legal process wherever possible.
If we have simply gotten a fact wrong — a misspelled title, an incorrect publisher attribution, a game listed under the wrong system — we want to know that too, and we will fix it. Please use the same contact address and let us know.
6. User-Submitted Content
If the Service allows users to submit content — including game descriptions, custom lists, notes, or comments — users are solely responsible for ensuring that their submissions do not infringe the rights of any third party. By submitting content, you represent that you have the necessary rights to do so. Goathead Software reserves the right to remove any user-submitted content that we believe, in our sole discretion, infringes third-party rights or violates these terms.
7. Reporting Trademark Errors
We make a good-faith effort to attribute games, publishers, and designers correctly. Mistakes happen, and if you spot one — a game attributed to the wrong publisher, a designer credited incorrectly, a trademark used in a way that misrepresents its owner — we want to know. Corrections are usually fast and we will make them whenever the factual record supports it. Reach out via the IP contact above.
Terms of Service
1. Acceptance of Terms
These Terms of Service are a legal agreement between you and Goathead Software, the operator of Second in Command. By accessing or using the Service, you agree to be bound by these terms. - Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the Service or its underlying infrastructure.
- Interfere with or disrupt the Service or servers connected to it.

4. Your Content
You retain ownership of any content you submit to the Service. By submitting content, you grant Goathead Software a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, display, and process that content solely for the purpose of operating the Service for you. This license ends when you delete the content or your account, subject to a reasonable backup period.
You represent and warrant that you own or have the necessary rights to any content you submit, and that your content does not infringe the rights of any third party.
5. Intellectual Property
The Service itself — including its design, code, logos, and original content — is owned by Goathead Software and protected by intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works from the Service without our prior written permission, except as expressly permitted by these terms or by applicable law. Third-party trademarks and content referenced by the Service remain the property of their respective owners, as described in the Trademarks section above.
6. Disclaimers
The Service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. Goathead Software does not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error-free. We do not warrant that any defects will be corrected, or that the Service or the servers that make it available are free of viruses or other harmful components.
7. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Goathead Software shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including without limitation loss of profits, data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses, resulting from (a) your access to or use of or inability to access or use the Service; (b) any conduct or content of any third party on the Service; (c) any content obtained from the Service; or (d) unauthorized access, use, or alteration of your transmissions or content, whether based on warranty, contract, tort (including negligence), or any other legal theory, whether or not we have been informed of the possibility of such damage.
8. Termination
Goathead Software reserves the right to suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time, with or without notice, for any reason, including but not limited to a violation of these terms. You may terminate your account at any time by using the account deletion feature or by contacting us.
Upon termination, your right to use the Service will cease immediately. Any provisions of these terms that by their nature should survive termination shall survive, including without limitation ownership provisions, warranty disclaimers, indemnity, and limitations of liability.
9. Governing Law
These terms shall be governed and construed in accordance with the laws of the jurisdiction in which Goathead Software is established, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these terms will not be considered a waiver of those rights.
10. Changes to These Terms
Goathead Software may update these terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email or by a prominent notice on the Service before the changes take effect. By continuing to use the Service after changes become effective, you agree to be bound by the revised terms.
